Apparently there isn’t thing in our life not along for the ride on the adventure. Now even the chickens are on wheels.
Backstory: we got chickens for our youngest daughter Phalenβs 8th birthday. We decided Ashland, also known as, Ashlandia, wasnβt the best home base for us. Once we were on the way to better horizons, we cunningly found a way to bring our chickens with. We weren’t sure exactly where they were headed, but then again neither were we.
The Jeep is the Best Tow and Towable Vehicle
Luckily we recently got a jeep to flat tow behind the Sprinter. We got a Jeep as it is the ultimate flat town vehicle for the van, see Wayfind Vans . Jeeps is also good at hauling anything, even chickens. It was perfect to pull our rigged chicken-coop-on-wheels. Probably one of the best investments we have made in our Sprinter adventures.
How to Put Chickens on Wheels
Putting the chickens on wheels was pretty easy. First we bought a used 8×12 bare bones flatbed trailer, originally built as a whitewater raft trailer. Second, we did a little rigging to secure the chickensβ legit predator proof cage made by Producer’s Pride you can buy from Tractor Supply here. We love this predator proof chicken cage. It can be torn down and rebuilt on a trailer with minimal effort. That speaks to its quality. Lastly, we placed their actual coop inside, secured it down to the base, and voilΓ – adventure chickens.
The chickens checked out the inside of the van before we made the journey. Who doesn’t like van chickens?
How to Fit All the Pets
How many pets can you put on wheels? Dog, cats, now chickens. As I’ve posted previously, the cats, Vata and Pitta, really have the prime spot in the van, see here.
The dog, Chandra, gets whatever spot sheβll fit into, because she is a German Shepard. Chandra loves to join the girls on our bunk system when she sleeps at night. Itβs the best van bed we know of, since fits not only a big child but a big dog comfortably too.
I think once an idea has been planted, there is no real turning around. Then when you come back full circle, itβs not the place you left. Because you arenβt who you were when you got on the path. Then you realize, the path shapes you more than you shape the path. We are full circle once again, with our beloved pets and kids, our chickens on wheels, our Sprinter Van home.
We have the spark in our hearts, with lots to look forward to. Lots of fresh tales to be told. And eggs.
